Pirkle-Concept p-Acceptors Chiral Columns
The first Pirkle-concept chiral stationary phases (CSP’s) were p-electron acceptors. They resolve enantiomers that are p-electron donors, the p-electrons being supplied by aromatic groups within the enantiomers. The phenylglycine and leucine CSP’s are based on the 3,5-dinitrobenzoyl derivatives of phenylglycine and leucine, respectively.

The Pirkle-concept columns can be used to separate a wide range of optical isomers, including those of alcohols, sulfoxides, bi-b-naphthols, and b-hydroxysulfides.

a-Burke 2 Chiral Columns
The a-Burke 2 is a p-electron accepting chiral stationary phase specifically designed for the enantioseparation of underivatized b-blockers.

Pirkle-Concept p-Donor Chiral Columns
The second series of chiral stationary phases are p-electron donors. They are designed to separate amines, amino acids, alcohols, and thiols that have been derivatized with a p-electron acceptor. These p-donor columns are the Pirkle-concept naphthylleucine.
