J&Ws Megabore columns were
originally designed as "the packed column
alternative" to make it easy for packed column users
to enjoy the advantages of fused silica columns. Megabore
columns have become popular for a multitude of
applications because these columns:
1. Have high sample capacity
2. Operate at higher gas flow rates
3. Are compatible with all sample introduction
techniques
Megabore columns have the greatest
capacity of all fused silica columns. This greater sample
"load-ability" permits larger sample injections
of gases and liquids than are possible with columns of
smaller diameter. For liquid injections, this allows up
to 3 µL sample volumes (up to 1 mL for gases) and as
much as 1-10 µg per component without overloading. This
gives Megabore columns the widest sample dynamic range of
the current fused silica columns.
Megabore columns can be operated over a
wide range of carrier gas flows from 3 to 40 mL/min. For
applications requiring maximum resolution, the column is
typically operated at or slightly above the optimum
linear velocity (helium flow rates of 4 mL/min).
Megabore columns are compatible with
all sample introduction techniques used in gas
chromatography. The 0.53 mm internal diameter permits not
only direct, split and splitless injections, but is
easily interfaced for cool on-column injections.
Automated sampling using sampling valves, static
headspace and purge & trap are possible without major
hardware modifications because of the higher operating
carrier flow rates of Megabore columns.
These columns are easily interfaced
to existing packed column gas chromatographs and can be
operated with most GC detectors without the need for
makeup gas.
