Should You be Using a Glass Pre-filter Syringe Filter?

Proper sample filtration improves both the quality and consistency of analytical results, while also prolonging the lifetime of your instrument’s replacement parts. One method of filtration that is popular among chromatographers is to use syringe filters, because they are inexpensive and easy to use.

Syringe filters come in multiple membrane types, pore sizes, and diameters and choosing the right option can seem intimidating, but we break it in a previous blog: How to Choose a Syringe Filter.

What About Extra Dirty Samples?

For extra dirty samples, such as ethanol applications, a glass prefilter can be used to aid with flow and reduce some of the pressure buildup that can happen from the sample filtrates building up on the membrane. While this can greatly aid in filtration for samples that won’t easily pass through a regular syringe filter, we really only recommend the glass pre-filter for applications with a great deal of particulate matter. This is because the glass pre-filter does add an additional cost, most applications only need one layer of filtration before injection.
